The continual need for materials with well-defined structures and properties has driven an evolution of methodologies for molecular synthesis, structural control and materials manufacturing. Chemical approaches offer fundamental strategies for the design, synthesis, control and manufacture of small molecules, polymers and networks. However, the use of chemical approaches in the synthesis of polymers with predesigned primary- and high-order structures is associated with long-standing bottlenecks, which arise from unsolved problems related to chemistry, physics and materials science.
Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are a class of crystalline porous polymer. They are unique in that they enable the polymerization of monomers into crystalline polymers with fully predesignable primary- and high-order structures. Interestingly, this polymerization deploys covalent bonds to construct the primary-order structures and layered polymeric networks via supramolecular polymerization. In this Lecture, I will share our journey to the initiation and development of this fascinating field from the viewpoints of chemistry and materials science.

江东林教授,现任新加坡国立大学化学系教务长讲席教授,欧洲科新利官方网站(中国)入口院士。1989年在浙江大学化学系获学士学位,1998年在东京大学获博士学位,同年任东京大学助理教授,2005年任日本分子科学研究所副教授,2016年任北陆先端科学技术大新利官方网站(中国)入口大学教授,2018年加入新加坡国立大学化学系任战略特聘教授,2022年当选为欧洲科新利官方网站(中国)入口院士。江东林教授是共价有机框架结构材料领域基础的开创者之一,主要研究方向是二维聚合物和共价有机框架(COFs)的化学、物理及材料,在Science, Nature, Nat. Mater., Nat. Chem., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed., Chem, Chem. Soc. Rev.等期刊发表论文百余篇,引用超过20000次;2018―2022年连续入选科睿唯安全球高被引科学家,曾获第34届日本化学会学术奖、德国洪堡研究奖、日本高分子学会学术奖、日本文部省青年科学家奖等多个奖项。
